Targeted Ads

Dear Facebook,

Your targeted ads are repugnant.

I will not be relinquishing any more children.

Targeted ads on your Facebook page may be letting you know that the fall boots at Zappos have arrived, or that the GOP is cutting funding for NPR. But Facebook has placed an ad on my sidebar from an attractive 30-something  couple who want to adopt. It’s one thing to have a cushy little inner tube of middle-aged weight and be constantly barraged by “the three foods that kill belly fat.” But it’s quite another to be a birthmother and find prospective adoptive parents creeping on you in your side-bar.

Get a clue Facebook

I’m now past childbearing age, Facebook. While you may know that I have relinquished a child, Mother Nature has now insured that I cannot make the same mistake twice. You know my birthday, Facebook, but I guess you don’t know much about biology. You also don’t know much about me. Your targeted ads are missing their target.

And Facebook? Just to be clear, I think it would be a bad idea to advertise coffins to people who’ve recently lost a loved one.

Hadn’t noticed this but I will pay attention! I tried to run ads from Google at First Mother Forum but they kept coming up for adoption agencies or search services I was not sure I wanted to seemingly be approving of, such an OmniSearch, because I’ve heard conflicting reports. Let’s all complain to Facebook about the noxious ads. I did get rid of the Sarah Palin ones–I suppose because I recognized her face. The other ads I haven’t paid attention to and lord I am sick of the belly fat ones too. One thing to do is take the year out of your Facebook profile. Keeping it there makes it easier for someone to steal your identity.

Scarier, I check my 16 year old daughter’s FB now and then, and this morning, there were two ads from couples (on her sidebar) soliciting for babies.

One from a male/female couple and one from a male/male couple… saying they were interested in the “life growing within you.”

How is this okay? Bypassing parents to get to our daughter’s potential unborn children?

How is this different from any other type of internet predator?
